Dr. Joi Shaw Morrison is a native of Huntsville, Alabama. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry from Fort Valley State University and subsequently worked as a Quality Control Chemist for Vintage Pharmaceuticals in Huntsville.

In 2002, Dr. Shaw graduated in the top 10 of her dental school class from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, being inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Society.

While a dental student, she volunteered in local soup kitchens and toy/clothing drives in the community. She was also active as the President of the National Dental Association.

Upon graduation, Dr. Morrison was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army, and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Fort Meade, Maryland. She then served as a Captain and a General Dentist until June of 2006 at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Dr. Morrison then began a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. During her residency, she presented her research on Alveolar cleft moulding appliances at the National Meeting of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) and at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).

In 2008, Dr. Morrison received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and a Masters of Science in Dentistry, and she also received the Peabody Award for Pediatric Dentistry. She completed her examination requirements to receive her Diplomate and Fellow status from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Joi Shaw Morrison is involved in numerous dental organizations which promote research, education, prevention and restoration of dental diseases, such as the HAPD, AAPD, and GHDS.

Dr. Morrison has received numerous honors and awards, such as a National Dental Association/Colgate-Palmolive Scholar, Ty Cobb Scholar, McRae-Orrington Scholar, Annual Student Award of the American Academy of Periodontology, Senior Honor’s Program Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Award, American Association of Women’s Dentists for Outstanding Leadership and Academic Excellence Award, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Achievement Award and the Student National Dental Association President’s Award.

Dr. Morrison is also active in her community where she has volunteered here and abroad. In Houston, she has served as a Give Kids a Smile Volunteer, a University of Texas House Medics Volunteer, Teddy Bear Clinic Volunteer at the Children’s Museum, Chinese Health Fair Volunteer and has volunteered her services for free days of dentistry in the local community.

In Tegucigalpa Honduras, she has volunteered as a dentist at Rancho Ebeneezer (an orphanage) and with World Gospel Outreach. Additionally, she has volunteered with Lakewood Church as a dentist in Mfangano Island in Kenya. As a result of this association, she is proud to be a sponsor of a college student in Kenya.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Morrison enjoys spending time with her husband, Dr. James Morrison, Jr. and their two sons. She also enjoys traveling, spending time with her extended family and being a baseball and football mom.
